Lots of people are ready to talk about where they live, how they live there, and to consider what might be their optimal living arrangement at their stage in life.

At the first housing mixer on July 26th, in collaboration with Transition Rogers Park and Mess Hall participants had thoughtful questions, observations, discussions and requests for more mixers.

One participant noted that living with others requires a level of emotional maturity that sometimes is beyond our reach. The prospect of living with emotional immaturity and the attendant drama is chilling.

As people sort out their options in this very uncertain time, participating in a listening circle is a timely idea. Parker Palmer’s book, Hidden Wholeness, describes the profound change that can from from them.

These circles are a potentially powerful tool for personal growth because the your participation is entirely voluntary saying as much or as little as you wish, without advice, feedback or commentary from anyone. As you talk and hear yourself, the profound wisdom that is within you has a chance to come forward. You then have access to a higher version of yourself.

Cornerstones of the listening circles are that advice from anyone is expressly prohibited and all proceedings are held in the highest confidence. Another advantage is that the cost is low and possibly even free. Listening circles need trained facilitators and the fee is mutually determined.

In this safe environment you hear yourself think without judgement. In the process, you become more centered and whole.

…. Screeching alarm. “This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. In the event of a real emergency… “ Was a frequently heard broadcast in the 70’s. I haven’t heard that in a long while.

This is not a test. It is a full blown, five-alarm emergency. A genuine emergency.

We need viable, shovel-ready ideas a lot sooner than we are going to get them from any government. People are dying waiting for the government to figure out how have people live indoors and have work to do. We are better off going on ahead and creating our own healthy, robust, cooperative, communities with our own wits, imagination, commitment, brains and brawn. Our legislators will catch up to an entirely new way of getting things done when we prove that it works.

New Community Vision is promoting cooperatives as a boots on the ground response to our challenged economy.
Cooperatively, we have access to goods and services that would be completely out of the range of normal in the old economy. Much of what we need exists within our communities. When we get to know our neighbors and leverage our resources, we will be shocked at the bounty that is under our noses. Please join the Transition Rogers Park Cooperative Study Group to learn the ways in which cooperatives have the potential to cooperatively improve each others’ lives.

Cooperatives are member owned, operated and governed organizations. As member owners, the members decide what they need and then organize cooperatively.

Cooperatively, communities decide what they need and, cooperatively, they create it. Please join the Transition Rogers Park Cooperative Study Group to learn more about this new way to do business.

Co-op America (co-opamerica.org) is a not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1982.

Our mission is to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.

Our Vision

We work for a world where all people have enough, where all communities are healthy and safe, and where the bounty of the Earth is preserved for all the generations to come.

What Makes Co-op America Unique

We focus on economic strategies—economic action to solve social and environmental problems.

We mobilize people in their economic roles—as consumers, investors, workers, business leaders.

We empower people to take personal and collective action

We work on issues of social justice and environmental responsibility. We see these issues as completely linked in the quest for a sustainable world. It’s what we mean when we say “green.”

We work to stop abusive practices and to create healthy, just and sustainable practices.
