The National Association of Housing Cooperatives (NHAC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit national federation of housing cooperatives, mutual housing associations, other resident-owned or controlled housing, professionals, organizations, and individuals interested in promoting the interests of cooperative housing communities. Incorporated in 1960, NAHC is the only national cooperative housing organization.

The North American Students of Cooperation (NASCO) Mission Statement: The North American Students of Cooperation (NASCO) Family [of associations] organizes and educates affordable group equity co-ops and their members for the purpose of promoting a community oriented cooperative movement.

Mandate: Since 1968, NASCO and its affiliates have been working with students, worker-owners, activists, and community members who are interested in applying cooperative principles to meet their needs and fulfill their various missions. NASCO provides education and technical assistance to its members and co-op organizing groups, assists its members in communicating with each other, acts to educate the public in cooperative principles and practices, and promotes the co-op movement as a whole.

The National Shared Housing Resource Center (NSHRC) is a non-profit organization fueled by the efforts of volunteers and serves as clearinghouse of information for people looking to find a shared housing organization in their community or to help get a program started. It provides the following services…

Serves as a national clearinghouse for consumer inquiries to shared housing programs.
Provides technical assistance for program start-up, problem solving, and marketing strategies through literature, site visits and a national conference.
Informs other allied organizations about shared housing.
Maintains a national directory of shared housing programs.
Produces a shared housing newsletter, plus other publications and resources.

NSHRC’s website indicates that Alaska, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Montana and Nevada have no agencies to point people in the direction of shared housing. California, Illinois, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Vermont have several agencies.

This November, over 400 housing co-op members, cooperative educators, and representatives of democratic organizations from all over the U.S., Canada, and beyond will converge in Ann Arbor, MI for NASCO’s Cooperative Education and Training Institute.

We will exchange ideas, learn new skills, and examine the connections between land use, human rights, economic development, and the cooperative movement. Through workshops, discussions, film screenings, panels, and caucuses, we will share the knowledge and tools to prepare the soil from which we will grow our vision of a just land system for ourselves and our communities.

The National Association of Housing Cooperatives (www.nahc.coop) is a nonprofit national federation of housing cooperatives, mutual housing associations, member associations, other commonly owned resident-owned or controlled housing, professionals, organizations, and individuals interested in promoting the interests of cooperative housing communities. Organized in 1950 and incorporated in 1960, NAHC is the only national cooperative housing organization. Membership in NAHC provides many benefits. It is a forceful advocate in Washington, D.C., for cooperative housing and cooperative housing legislation and provides many member services, including a national conference with outstanding educational programs and an annual meeting at which member cooperatives elect members to the board of directors.
