In January when the wind chill was six-below, while waiting for the Addison bus at Pulaski, a woman carrying an infant shot like a rocket from the alley into the 7-Eleven. Her mission seemed obvious: she needed something from the store and could not leave her child alone even for 5-minutes. Extra points for good judgment.

The vignette has stayed with me because I would bet $10 that reliable and trustworthy people live in her building who a) would happily look after her child; b) may have the very thing that she needed from the store; c) would be willing, and perhaps even honored, to run out to the store to pick up whatever she needed.

The tragedy is that we don’t know our neighbors and they don’t know us.

We have hired Laura Fitch of Kraus/Fitch Architects, a prominent architectural firm in Massachusetts which has designed many cohousing communities. She will conduct three week-end long workshops in August, September and October for members and potential members. These workshops will focus on the design of the site and green features; the common house; and the units.

Laura will lead members and prospective members in turning ideas and priorities into concrete plans for the buildings and grounds.
