Thanks, Marty. I’m watching a friend go through a wrenching experience and he’s very concerned about his children. I continue to reassure him that, although this is difficult, they will be fine. He doesn’t see it because he’s in the throes of it, but I do.

You are right – it is nearly a universal experience. It seems that everyone has a crushing heartache. Maybe that’s part of being human. You got through yours and you help others get through theirs. Many people are emotionally healthier now than could have been dreamed of years ago.

Thanks for writing such a thoughtful response. I feel emotionally very sturdy now so the time, effort and cash that I put into becoming whole really paid off. I see many people confronting loss without the skills to process it in a healthy way. I believe that part of my work is to promote listening circles and refer people to them. This is needed all over the country and possibly all over the world.

My years conducting psychotherapy convinced me those who have sustained/survived/surmounted those most personal wounds of abusive, denied or deferred intimacy are most suited for facilitating others’ healing processes.
My years as a social worker applying half-solutions to dysfunctional households in persistently dysfunctional communities convinced me that the only way families may learn to live healthy, functional lives is in constructive and thriving, cooperative communities, and the only way communities may become, and/or sustain themselves as vibrant entities, is to foster the best in their member citizens, families, organizations and institutions. My years in my own dysfunctional “first family” made much of your material come to life.

The process begins, and expands, with the utterance of truth by those with the courage to speak in a commonly understood language, using clear voices guided by open hearts. The silver lining in the unfortunately near-universal experience of dysfunctional families is that, as these circumstances are familiar to all, it doesn’t take much time or effort for honest, undefended people to recognize the commonality in their shared experiences and to decide that the solution involves everyone working together for the benefit of each and all.

One definition of leadership suggests that authentic leaders are those who take responsibility for confronting and overcoming the challenges facing a family, team, group or organization. Appreciate your being willing to step forward as a leader with this blog, and with your personal testimony.

Hi Mary, I am delighted to have met you at the Transition training and I trust that this is just the beginning of a long friendship! Although I have certainly known sadness, I don’t feel sad very often now, although I feel highly attuned to it in others. I am honored that my journey took you to a profound place in your life. That was certainly my intent!
My New Community Vision work to connect communities has displaced my sadness with happiness and even optimism. I see so many hardworking people of high integrity holding it together against daunting odds. Creating a system where we can lean on each other will give us a big boost and shine light in our darkness. And it is well within our reach. Thanks again for reaching out!
